The purpose of this workflow detail is to:
- identify roles (known as "Business Workers") involved in business processes defined in Artifact: Business Use Cases
- define roles and the organization as a whole
- refine the organizational design based on refinements in the business process design
- review and refine the business design
The extent to which an organization's structure and purpose need to change to support business strategy or to leverage a new system varies widely. The degree of completion and formality of these activities and artifacts varies, depending on the project's goals and extent of organizational change.
Designing business organizations is closely related to the processes supporting the business strategy. The organization's design must support business strategy operations. To define the business organization, the Role: Business Designer performs Activity: Find Business Workers and Entities and Activity: Define Business Organization to identify business workers or roles required within the organization. The Activity: Define Business Organization also arranges individual roles into larger organizational structures. The roles and organizational structures are used to refine the details of the business processes, especially the Artifact: Business Process Realizations. Organizational design and business processes are key aspects of the Activity: Define Business Operations and its resulting Artifact: Business Operations Plan. Related artifacts should be synchronized throughout this effort.
The Business Designer performs Activity: Detail a Business Entity to capture the details of business entities, usually in the form of a UML class diagram. (A glossary entry could also serve this purpose). A business entity is anything produced or used by the business during its operations. For example, on an insurance project, the Artifact: Business Object Model varies by project. Remember that the Workflow Detail: Develop a Domain Model produces a subset of the Artifact: Business Object Model, which may be sufficient for your project.

Role: Business Designers should work closely with stakeholders, key customers, and Role: Business Strategists to define the organizational structure. The Business Strategists provide input to and feedback on the organizational design as it relates to the enterprise's ability to realize the business strategy.
The Role: Business Process Analyst performs Activity: Define Business Operations, focusing on the organizational aspects of business operations. The Business Designer, Business Strategist, and stakeholders all provide input to and feedback on this work.
People responsible for capturing, explaining, and later deploying any organizational changes must have excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively explain the changes and overcome resistance to these changes.
